Narrow in the water for speed and big above for space and comfort

The award-winning Leopard 44 (Sunsail 444 or Moorings 4400 in charter) sailing catamaran designed by the legendary Morrelli & Melvin and built by Roberson and Caine was in production from 2010-2016.  Our 2012 four stateroom version is a robust ocean crossing vessel with comfort and ease of handling in mind.  All controls, including the halyards, lead back to winches at the raised helm. One especially unique feature that sets it apart is the addition of the open forward cockpit with direct access from the salon.  This flowthrough design not only provides safe access forward but also improves ventilation and visibility to the interior.

We were lucky enough to find the perfect boat for us.  A hurricane Irma damaged charter version named "Python Voyager 2."  Being considered a constructive total loss, the equipment that was not damaged by the category 5 hurricane was taken by the charter company to amalgamate other boats in the fleet. Heck, even the mast and both engines were missing or non-functional.

There are countless boats out there all serving different purposes, some better than others, but all with seemingly good intentions.  In order to choose our new home, we looked to the following requirements.:

  • Modern and all fiberglass

  • 40+ foott length for stability crossing oceans

  • Rugged and fast

  • Enough space for our “family”

  • Room to have guests and crew

  • Enough deck for tons of solar and a micro plantation

  • Shallow draft to explore deeper

  • Dual sail drive for regen and maneuverability

  • Single handed, easy sailing

  • Good visibility from helm and main living spaces

  • Galley up so we can be close to the action

  • Production boat still in business with good support and documentation

  • Last but not least... CHEAP!

why this boat?

Python Voyager 2 checked all the boxes for us. A hurricane damaged catamaran would be the only way we could fit these things into our budget and go sailing fulltime. As the surveyor described to us, "You are buying a skeleton with good bones."  To us, it didn't matter that the engines were toast.  We knew we wanted to eventually go off grid with no fossil fuels so having the engines out of the way was just one less thing to labor over. We could make her what we needed and nothing more.
